O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high school student. She made it to the top 100 round due to the fact that judges were awed at her singing performance. O'Neil had received high praise from jury. However, she suffered significant defeats during the Top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed within the bottom three followed by the second place. The judges were surprised by her performance, and advised viewers to choose contestants who sang well and had a strong voice, like Melissa.
